Last summer (2014), fellow composer Marc Junker and I swung by Value Village with a mallet with the goal of banging on things until we found something – anything – that made interesting sounds. After about a half-hour and a bunch of confused shoppers, we ended up with five stainless steel mixing bowls, a dog biscuit tin, a saucepan lid, and a Wizard of Oz lunchbox.
These things became the rhythmic core for the score for Maureen Bradley’s debut feature film, Two 4 One (http://www.two4onefilm.com). We used these instruments, and a few others (including a mod’ed Gameboy 8-bit sound performance thingy that Marc whipped up, and trumpet performed by my pal Esme John) to reinforce the offbeat, quirky nature of the film. I even dusted off my clarinet and played a few parts. It was a super fun project and it’s a great film.
From the Two 4 One website: “Two 4 One is a bittersweet romantic comedy that features a transgender protagonist in an unimaginable predicament. Oddball couple Adam and Miriam have an ill-advised and pivotal one night stand that sees them both wind up pregnant.”
